The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the fundamental pillar of risk assessment in the area of food safety in the European Union. EFSA stands out for its independence as it is an independent European authority financed through the EU budget, and which works independently of the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the EU member states. EFSA is commissioned to produce scientific reports from the European Commission, the European Parliament, and EU member states and carries out scientific work on its own initiative.
